Merging Ionospheric Outflow Models to GGCM's

Location, Date/Time and Duration

2 hours

Conveners (First is CEDAR convener, Second is GEM convener, the rest are co-conveners)

Dan Welling
Bob Schunk
Rick Chappell

Format of the Workshop

The session will begin with an invited tutorial to review the existing mechanics involved in coupling the two regimes. Workshop-style talks to examine future coupling goals as well as the impact on the magnetosphere when such outflow in included will follow.

Estimated attendance

Because of the overlap of interest in both the CEDAR and GEM communities, we estimate the attendance at 100 people.

Justification for the workshop

This workshop will be an important element of the new GEM Focus Group on The Ionospheric Source of Magnetospheric Plasma. It is one of a set of workshops that are being proposed for the CEDAR-GEM meeting in order to kick-off this new area of study

Requested Specific Days

It would be helpful if this workshop could be scheduled after the proposed workshop on Measurements of Ion Outflow and after the proposed workshop on Modeling Ionospheric Outflow so as to fit together with the other workshop elements on this topic that are being proposed. We also plan to propose a final workshop planning session toward the end of the week.

Special technology requests

Although the technology requirements for the workshop will depend on the specific requests of the participating speakers, we anticipate the need for an LCD projector compatible with laptop computers as well as internet access.

Description

Geospace Generalized Circulation Models (GGCMs), invaluable tools for studying the Earth’s magnetosphere, have historically neglected the ionospheric source of magnetospheric plasma. Recently, an increased recognition of the importance of this source has spurred the magnetospheric modeling community towards finding new, innovative ways to include it in the large-scale models. This workshop will examine existing merging techniques between outflow and magnetosphere models and review recent discoveries concerning the impact ionospheric outflow has on the global magnetospheric results

Workshop Summary

This is where the final summary workshop report will be.
