Hinode Post-doc and other jobs at the Naval Research Laboratory - due 1 Aug

The Solar Variability Group at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC anticipates hiring one or more postdoctoral or mid-career research scientists to participate in data analysis for the instruments on the Hinode spacecraft, primarily the EUV Imaging Spectrometer. A variety of investigations using this data are already in progress, including studies of the heating of the solar corona, energy release in solar flares, and active region dynamics. Successful applicants will also be expected to make several short international trips to participate in instrument operations and data exchange. A PhD in astrophysics, physics, applied mathematics, or a closely related field is required. Experience using Unix, C, IDL or similar software is essential. A background in EUV or Soft X-ray spectroscopy is desirable but not required.

The postdoctoral level positions are initially for one year, with up to three years of funding currently available. The mid-career level positions are more open ended in duration. For both levels of employment, eventual conversion to a Federal career position is possible. A suitable mid-career applicant could be offered a Federal position immediately.

Interested applicants should submit an electronic CV to Dr. John Mariska (mariska@nrl.navy.mil), who can also be contacted with any questions about the position. All applications received by August 1, 2007 will be give full consideration, but we will accept applications until the positions are filled. The start dates for these positions are flexible. Salary will be commensurate with experience, but for the postdoctoral level positions will be at least at the level of an NRL National Research Council Research Associate position ($63,048). Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.
