Post-doc on magnetic storms at Virginia Tech

The Space Science Research Group seeks a postdoctoral associate to undertake research on geomagnetic storm time phenomena, including global sawtooth oscillations. The research will include the analysis of global ground based and space based data sets as well as the application of global MHD computer simulations to investigate storm time phenomena.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Pursue research goals with routine consultation, but limited supervision
  • Supervise/train undergraduate or graduate students in laboratory
  • Assist in project design, execution, and interpretation of research projects to gain practical experience in the field
  • Prepare professional presentations, professional reports, and publications
  • Engage in collaborative work with peers to achieve research objectives

Required Qualifications

  • Recent doctoral degree in electrical engineering or physics completed by the time of appointment
  • Familiarity with the analysis of ground based and space based data sets and particularly storm time data is essential

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Applicants with experience using global MHD simulations models of the Sun- Earth system.
  2. Demonstrated creativity, independence and high motivation.
  3. Good communication skills.
  4. Strong work habits and the ability to work independently as well as with a research group.
  5. Evidence of good project management and laboratory management skills.
  6. Evidence of developing publications based on individual research.
  7. Ability to work under limited supervision.
  8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel in the organization.

This position involves working with scientists at both the National Institute of Aerospace in Hampton, VA and faculty on the Blacksburg campus of Virginia Tech.
