With rising costs of fuel and other logistical resources, the U.S. Antarctic Program faces considerable challenges in supporting research at current levels. This Town Hall Meeting will offer a brief overview of the situation, followed by a "questions & answers" session to allow the community to understand better the current situation and offer feedback to the USAP program representatives.

4) ROCSAT-1 IPEI Data Available on CDAWeb

Ionospheric data from the ROCSAT-1 Ionospheric Plasma and Electrodynamics Instrument (IPEI) are now available on the CDAWeb system (http://cdaweb.gsfc.nasa.gov) for plotting, browsing, listing and downloading in CDF and ASCII format. ROCSAT-1 (later renamed FORMOSAT-1), the first scientific satellite of Taiwan, was launched on January 27, 1999 into a circular orbit at 600 km with an inclination of 35 degrees and operated in space until June 17, 2004. The IPEI instrument consisted of an ion trap measuring the total ion concentration, a pair of ion drift meters measuring the two cross-track ion flow velocities and a retarding potential analyzer measuring ion composition, ion temperature and ram flow velocities. Prof. Shin-Yi Su from the National Central University in Chung-Li, Taiwan is the PI for the IPEI experiment and the IPEI home page is at http://csrsddc.csrsr.ncu.edu.tw/.

The data set includes total ion density, ion temperature, ion composition (percentage of O+, H+, He+, NO+), ion drift vector in spacecraft coordinates and in magnetic field coordinates, and orbit parameters. This a critical data set for studies of the low latitude ionosphere and the Equatorial Ionization Anomaly complementing earlier data sets like the DE-2 RPA/IDM data that are now available on CDAWeb and supporting new missions like C/NOFS CINDI.

ROCSAT-1 orbit parameters are include on SPDF's SSCweb system (http://sscweb.gsfc.nasa.gov) that lets users find conjunctions (radial and magnetic) with other spacecraft and ground stations for event studies. A 4D Viewer helps to visualize satellite orbits and now also includes magnetic ground-tracks of the satellite orbit on the rotating Earth.

Other ionospheric data in CDAWeb's cross-disciplinary data holdings include high-resolution data from all TIMED instruments, ionogram data from the Alouette 1,2 and ISIS 1,2 satellites, and DE-1 EICS and SAI data. High- resolution DE data are being currently added as part of an LWS Data Upgrade project.


5) REU Summer Assistantships at the Arecibo Observatory - due 2 Feb 2009

The National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center (NAIC) will conduct a summer student program for undergraduates at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico during Summer 2009, which is funded by the National Science Foundation's Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program. Areas of research include radio and radar astronomy, and space and atmospheric sciences. Students interested in electronic instrumentation or computer science are also encouraged to apply. The assistantships, which include a stipend, on-site lodging and round trip airline tickets, are conducted during a flexible ten week period beginning in late May. Students will have opportunities to visit many of the beautiful sites of Puerto Rico, which is a U.S. Commonwealth.

Undergraduates who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and who will be enrolled in a bachelor's degree program (part or full time) during Fall 2009 are eligible. In addition, NAIC anticipates supporting one or two positions for first- or second-year graduate students who are enrolled in US institutions (non-US citizens may apply). 6) NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship (NESSF) Program - due 3 Feb 2009


NASA announces a call for graduate fellowship proposals to the NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship (NESSF) program for the 2009-2010 academic year. This call for fellowship proposals solicits applications from accredited U.S. universities on behalf of individuals pursuing Master of Science (M.Sc.) or Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in Earth and space sciences, or related disciplines. The purpose of NESSF is to ensure continued training of a highly qualified workforce in disciplines needed to achieve NASA's scientific goals. Awards resulting from the competitive selection will be made in the form of training grants to the respective universities.

The deadline for NEW applications is February 3, 2009, and the deadline for RENEWAL applications is March 16, 2009.

7) Position on Space Weather Models into Operations at Offutt AFB, NE


UCAR's Visiting Scientist Programs is recruiting a visiting scientist to work in the Air Force Weather Agency's (AFWA) Second Weather Group, in the area of space weather. This includes modeling improvements and exploitation of new space weather science. The position is located at HQ AFWA, Offutt AFB, Nebraska.

The applicant will work within AFWA's Second Weather Group. Overall research will be directed by the Chief, Space Weather Integration Team, Applied Operations. AFWA's facility at Offutt AFB is the largest military meteorological computer complex in the world, with over 900 people. The mission of AFWA is maximizing America's power through the exploitation of timely, accurate, and relevant weather information.

8) Postdoc in Arctic climate research using lidar at Dalhousie U, Canada


     The Atmospheric-Optics Lab in Physics and Atmospheric Science  

at Dalhousie University (Halifax, Canada) seeks a postdoctoral fellow to operate and maintain a new Raman lidar system located in the High Arctic at Eureka, Nunavut Territory, as part of the Arctic Radiative Environment Theme of the Canadian Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Change (CANDAC). The lidar will be used to measure tropospheric temperatures and water vapour, in addition to the optical properties of aerosols and ice crystals, and will be operated in conjunction with an Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI). This is a research position, and the successful applicant will be required to analyze the measurements and publish the results. Experience in lidar operations and/or high-energy laser systems is desired, although a firm grounding in other areas of experimental science may be accepted. Field trips to Eureka are an important aspect of the position, and computer programming ability is required. The successful applicant will take a leadership role in a highly collaborative environment.
