(1) Second edition of Schunk and Nagy "Ionospheres: Physics, Plasma Physics and Chemistry" available in August 2009.
From Andrew Nagy (email@example.com)
A new, second edition of the Schunk and Nagy "Ionospheres; Physics, Plasma Physics and Chemistry" will be available from Cambridge University Press starting in August. This second edition is a significantly modified, updated and enhanced version of the original 1st Edition. It is 650 pages long, with 16 appendices and home problems (problem solutions will be available to qualified instructors). It covers the basic physics, transport equations, collision processes and plasma physics needed to attack problems associated with ionospheric phenomena. It deals with the terrestrial and planetary upper atmospheres. It discusses in detail the terrestrial high, mid and low latitude ionospheres, as well as ionospheres found in our solar system. It has a chapter devoted to in-situ and remote measurement techniques. The excellent reviews and constructive feedbacks we received on the first edition encouraged us to work on this new edition, which we hope will be equally well received.

Second Announcement: Second Annual High Energy Particle Precipitation in the Atmosphere (HEPPA) Workshop Date: 6-8 October 2009 Registration Fee: $200 Registration Deadline: Friday, 14 August 2009 Abstract Deadline: Friday, 14 August 2009
Please join us for a three-day workshop focused on observational and modeling studies of atmospheric and ionospheric changes caused by energetic particle precipitation (EPP). Presentations on sources of precipitating energetic particles of all energy levels, transport of the precipitating particles, impacts on atmospheric dynamics and composition on all time scales, aviation/space flight hazards from precipitating particles, and future measurements are welcome.
Location: The workshop will be located at the base of the Rocky Mountains in Boulder, Colorado, USA, at the National Center for Atmospheric Research Center Green facility.
Format: The workshop will consist of invited tutorials to bring together people from various disciplines, invited talks, contributed talks, and contributed posters. Lively discussions will be encouraged. Sessions are arranged as follows: 1. Tutorials 2. Precipitating Particle Sources 3. EPP effects on the Thermosphere & Ionosphere 4. Direct EPP effects on the middle and lower atmosphere 5. Indirect EPP effects and atmospheric coupling 6. Future measurements and aviation hazards 7. Second HEPPA model/measurement comparison workshop (led by Bernd Funke and Manuel Lopez Puertas)
Tutorials will be given by: Daniel Baker, Richard Mewaldt, Janet Green, Martin Friedrich, Stanley Solomon, Gabrielle Stiller, and David Siskind.
Other invited talks will be given by: Gang Lu, Marty Mlynczak, Pekka Verronen, Don Smart, Scott Bailey, and Peggy Shea.
