Outflow Modeling, Measuring and Merging Planning Session

Location, Date/Time and Duration

2 hours

Conveners (First is CEDAR convener, Second is GEM convener, the rest are co-conveners)

Dan Welling
Rick Chappell
Bob Schunk

Format of the Workshop

The session will begin with the focus group chairs reviewing the results and discussions from the previous sessions. The floor will then be opened to discuss future workshop sessions, research goals, and other focus group activities.

Estimated attendance

Because of the overlap of interest in both the CEDAR and GEM communities, we estimate the attendance at 50 people.

Justification for the workshop

This workshop will be an important element of the new GEM Focus Group on The Ionospheric Source of Magnetospheric Plasma. It is one of a set of workshops that are being proposed for the CEDAR-GEM meeting in order to kick-off this new area of study.

Requested Specific Days

Because this proposed session relies on the work performed at the other 3 Outflow MMM sessions, this session should occur towards the end of the GEM-CEDAR workshop after the proposed Measurements of Ion Outflow, Modeling Ionospheric Outflow and Merging Outflow Models to GGCM's sessions have been completed.

Special technology requests

Although the technology requirements for the workshop will depend on the specific requests of the participating speakers, we anticipate the need for an LCD projector compatible with laptop computers as well as internet access.

The Ionospheric Source of Magnetospheric Plasma: Modeling, Measuring, and Merging into the GEM GGCM focus group (or simply Outflow MMM) is a newly developed focus group aimed at combining research on ionospheric outflow with Geospace General Circulation Models (GGCMs). The focus group has four major goals: refine existing outflow models through data-model comparisons, merge these models into the GGCMs and examine the impact on the magnetosphere, evaluate the coupled codes through data-model comparisons, and examine feedback from the magnetosphere to the ionospheric outflow. This session will summarize the Outflow MMM sessions that have taken place throughout the workshop and work with the GEM and CEDAR communities to plan for the future of the 5-year focus group.

Workshop Summary

This is where the final summary workshop report will be.
