1) Magnetic observatories in Denmark and Greenland threatened by closure

Dear colleagues,

the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) informed me that due to reduced overall funding they plan to withdraw from all activities in the field of geomagnetism by the end of 2010. This includes terminating the operation of the geomagnetic observatories in Denmark and Greenland and the network of variometer stations in Greenland. Imagine that just when the Swarm satellite mission will provide the best geomagnetic satellite data ever no complementary ground data from Greenland and Denmark will be available anymore! For the two Greenland INTERMAGNET observatories Qaanaaq (formerly Thule) and Narsarsuaq a "continuation on a technical level" is considered, but to anyone familiar with running geomagnetic observatories that unclear term must also raise strong concerns about future data quality from these locations.

Moreover, it is unclear whether the production of FGE variometers will be continued. These instruments are used as the standard three-component variometers in many observatories worldwide and only few alternatives exist. A termination of the production and maintenance of these instruments would also be a severe drawback for many observatories.

If you are using geomagnetic data from the DMI (Greenland) observatories or variometer stations, or if your institute is active in contributing to the global network of geomagnetic observatories, please consider expressing your concerns about the termination plans to DMI and the relevant political decision makers in Denmark, namely

Please help us to show them the importance of geomagnetic ground data for the international geomagnetic community and thus try to perpetuate the geomagnetic observatories and variometer stations in Denmark and Greenland. Inter-Divisional Symposium (Division II and III) lead by Division II, Equatorial atmosphere-ionosphere interactive processes: vertical and latitudinal coupling and magnetospheric forcing

The earth's equatorial and low latitude atmosphere-ionosphere system is subject to significant modification due to dynamical and electro-dynamical coupling processes arising from upward transport of energy and momentum by gravity-, tidal- and planetary waves originating from lower heights and extra-tropics, which results in its large zonal, day-to-day and inter-annual variabilities. Magnetospheric/interplanetary forcing through disturbance electric fields and energy deposition at high latitudes with the consequent coupling to equatorial latitudes represents another important source of variability of the system at different time scales. Important new results from ground based instruments networks, space borne observations and simulation studies on the different coupling processes and sources of variabilities of the system have been forthcoming in recent years. This symposium will address all aspects of the dynamics, energetics and coupling processes of the atmosphere- ionosphere- system of the latitude region extending from the equator to mid-latitudes. Results are welcome from experimental, theoretical and modeling investigations, and on manifestations of the coupling process through the responses of the system to magnetic storms and upward propagating atmospheric wave disturbances etc. in terms of small and large structures, TEC, winds and waves, temperatures, plasma drifts, electric fields, currents, precursor conditions for equatorial plasma bubble development, anomaly and electrojet variabilities etc.
