Instrument/Model Description

This data set was taken by the University of Illinois iron (Fe) lidar team to study the seasonal variabilities of the Fe layer structure and their relationships to chemistry. The lidar was situated north of Urbana, IL at the Urbana Atmospheric Observatory (UAF), located at (40.1 N, 88.1 W).

The operating wavelength in the iron lidar mode was 372 nm. Data were obtained at altitudes between 75 and 115 km with a range resolution of 37.5 meters and an integration period of approximately 3 minutes. This integration period corresponds to 4500 laser pulses. Approximately 5 seconds are required to store each profile before beginning the next integration period. The lidar pointing was fixed at the zenith.

Summary plots of the mean Fe density between 75 and 115 km for each of 4 different nights are provided. An extensive discussion of these observations and the Fe layer chemistry can be found in the following journal papers.
