University of Illinois Sodium Lidar at Arecibo
This data set was taken by the University of Illinois sodium (Na) lidar team in support of the AIDA Act'89 (Arecibo Initiative of Dynamics in the Atmosphere) campaign carried out at the Arecibo Observatory (18.3N, 66.75W). The data were taken by Chris Hostetler firstname.lastname@example.org.
The operating wavelength was 589 nm with a range resolution of 37.5 meters and an integration period of approximately 23 seconds. This integration period corresponds to 4500 laser pulses. In the sodium lidar mode, data were obtained at altitudes between 75 and 110 km, while in the rayleigh lidar mode, data were obtained at altitudes between 20 and 70 km. Approximately 5 seconds are required to store each profile before beginning the next integration period. The lidar pointing was fixed at the zenith.
Summary plots of the mean sodium density between 70 and 120 km for 2 different nights are provided, with the relative neutral density between 20 and 70 km below each sodium density plot. The density is relative to the neutral density around 40 km. Bin sizes are 15 min in time and 0.5 km in height for the sodium density and 2.5 km in height for the relative neutral density.
