Instrument/Model Description

The Colorado State University sodium lidar is located at Fort Collins, Colorado at (40.59N, 105.14W). This is a narrowband sodium (Na) temperature lidar which was developed with CEDAR support. Initial observations were taken for 4 and 5 nights, respectively, in the springs of 1990 and 1991. Starting May 29, 1991, regular nighttime temperature measurements are taken about four to five nights a month. This is a list of the nights, and duration of data taken with the sodium lidar. Daytime observations were started on a regular basis in April 2002. Please contact Joe She or Dave Krueger if you are interested in collaborating with them on selected data in temperature and Na density.

The 1993 data are in the CEDAR Database. Average night-time temperatures at 87 km are available for 417 days up to 99088. The 417 nights are also the basis of average nightly climatologies of temperature and Na profiles as a function of day number for the climatological year 1995.

The lidar was upgraded to 3 frequencies to obtain the neutral wind in 2001. In April 2002, daytime data was taken as well as nighttime observations. The CEDAR Database has all observations starting from January 2002.

In some cases there are more hours of operation, especially at the beginning of an observing period, but these have been eliminated in the final analysis.
